Jyotish reads the Sun, the Moon, five planets and the two lunar nodes. Seven of them give their names to the days of the week.
From the chart itself to the timing of your life’s phases and the traditional remedies, everything is generated from the same set of calculated positions.

The 120-year planetary-period timeline from your Moon’s nakshatra: mahadasha, antardasha and the period you are in right now.
Mangal, Kaal Sarp and other classical doshas checked against your chart, explained in plain language rather than as a verdict.

Your place of birth is resolved to latitude, longitude and the civil time zone that applied there on your date of birth.
Your birth time is converted to Universal Time and then to a Julian Day, the continuous time scale astronomers use for planetary calculation.
Positions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the lunar nodes are computed from a planetary ephemeris, then shifted to the sidereal zodiac by subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa. A planet is marked retrograde when its apparent motion is westward. Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180° apart.
The ascendant is found from local sidereal time and your latitude. Houses are whole-sign: the rising sign is the 1st house and each following sign is the next house.
The zodiac’s 360° is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each split into four padas of 3°20′. Every planet is located within this grid.
The Moon’s nakshatra lord starts your sequence. The unexpired fraction of that nakshatra sets the balance of the first dasha, and the rest follow in the fixed order and lengths of the 120-year cycle, each split into antardashas in proportion.
Dasha order and years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Total 120.
Two grids sit under every kundli: twelve signs of 30° and twenty-seven nakshatras of 13°20′. The signs and nakshatra from the sample chart are marked.
Every convention we use is stated on this page, and the worked example can be checked by hand.
Charts, houses and Vimshottari dasha follow the Parashari tradition. KP is offered separately for those who use it.

Jyotish is an interpretive tradition. We present it faithfully, not as a guarantee about your future.
Not every part of a kundli is equally sensitive to the minute of birth. Here is what to expect if your time is approximate.
| Part of the chart | Why it moves | What a time error means | Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon sign & nakshatra | The Moon moves about 13° a day, roughly 0.5° an hour. | Changes only if the time is hours off, or the Moon is near a sign boundary. | Low |
| Vimshottari dasha | Depends on the Moon’s exact degree within its nakshatra. | Dates can shift by weeks for a time error of an hour or more. | Medium |
| Lagna (Ascendant) | A sign rises about every 2 hours, roughly 1° every 4 minutes. | The most time-sensitive part of the chart. | High |
| Divisional charts | The Navamsa (D9) of the Lagna changes about every 13 minutes. | Needs an accurate birth time to be meaningful. | Very high |
Best sources for birth time: the birth certificate or hospital record, then a family diary or horoscope made at the time. Times are averages and vary with the sign and your latitude.
Straight answers about how the chart is made and how to read it.
A Janam Kundli, also called a birth chart or horoscope, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It records the sign, house and nakshatra of the Sun, Moon, planets and lunar nodes, and the ascendant (Lagna). Vedic astrologers read it to understand temperament, strengths, life themes and timing.
Yes. Generating your kundli is free and needs no account or sign-up. Enter your date, time and place of birth and your report opens straight away.
The main chart uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India, and whole-sign houses, the traditional Parashari method. The ayanamsa value used for your birth date is shown with your report, so you can verify it.
Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and it fixes the houses. Rashi usually means the Moon’s sign. Nakshatra is the Moon’s lunar mansion, one of 27 divisions of the zodiac, and it sets the starting point of your dasha sequence.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned to the fixed stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, aligned to the seasons. The two differ by the ayanamsa, currently about 24°, so many people’s planets fall one sign earlier in Jyotish. Vedic charts also give the Moon sign (Rashi) as much weight as the Sun sign.
Yes, but with care. Planet signs, your Moon sign and nakshatra are usually stable across a few hours. The Lagna, house placements and divisional charts depend on the exact time. If possible, check the birth certificate, hospital record or ask family, and use the most precise time you can find.
It is the most widely used timing system in Jyotish, a 120-year cycle of planetary periods. Your sequence starts from the planet that rules your Moon’s nakshatra. Each major period (mahadasha) is divided into sub-periods (antardasha), and the planet running at a given time is said to colour the themes of that phase.
No. A dosha is a classical chart configuration, such as Mangal or Kaal Sarp, that traditional texts associate with particular challenges. Its effect depends on many other factors in the chart, and many classical cancellations exist. Treat it as something to understand and discuss, not as a verdict.
